My handsome husband surprised me with a date! He got my mom and sisters to babysit, and whisked me away to The Shire. We haven’t seen a movie in ages, because frankly, it has to be something AMAZING to tempt me into spending the money. I was soooo excited to see The Hobbit. It was a favorite childhood book of mine. As I’ve grown older I’ve also really come to idolize J.R. Tolkien as a writer, person and visionary. Brilliant, brilliant man.
We shared a pizza in a peaceful, quiet space with no projectile cheerios being thrown at us. We held hands and walked book shops, exploring and giggling that on-lookers probably thought we were just silly, dating, kids in love. Our own private secret that we’ve actually been married nearly 5 years and have two bouncey babies at home
The lights dimmed and the movie started in that magical way only a film of this sort can- and I was adventuring with underdog hobbits, boisterous dwarves and wise grey wizards for a few hours. It was magically meaningful and beautiful in a totally Tolkien sort of way.
We left with a bag of half eaten popcorn, to find the little square lit up with the magic of Christmas, which of course is all the more beautiful when you’re in love. A beautiful day, a movie that reminds you why you love movies, and a best friend to share it with.

Perfect.
